This is a testimonial from my client, Jennifer, who just completed our new 6-week online program, The Maintenance Method.
"I loved every part of this program ❤️. My biggest win in is actually eating all the food! I was amazed at how much food I actually needed to fuel my body. I was hesitant to eat so much food but it paid off in a big way. My sleep was better and I even lost a few pounds.
"The inches I lost were the most amazing though! I’d given up on having a flat stomach (and I honestly don’t care about that anymore), but the changes in my body during these past 6 weeks were mind-blowing!
"I'm going to adjust my macros and do a slight calorie deficit for the next 4 weeks just to test out what we learned about toggling between Maintenance and Fat Loss phases. But once I’m done, I’m getting my butt back in Maintenance and staying there for a while! "Even with adjusting my calories and macros in MFP I am amazed at how much I am eating in a fat loss phase. Looking forward to living life and enjoying it a little bit more now that foods I love really do fit into my lifestyle. Thank you Leslie Ann for creating and sharing this wonderful program with us." - Jennifer S., Maintenance Method client, Spring 2023. Q: What is the main reason you signed up for The Maintenance Method©?
A: I was eating for fat loss (i.e. in a calorie deficit) with a few more carbs thrown in and trying to build muscle. (I'm a member of the STRONGER TOGETHER Training Club and do the ST workouts). While I was going up in my weights, I wasn't seeing any progress in the mirror with new muscle growth.
NOTE: What Jennifer's describing here ^ is a really common misconception with training and nutrition! A lot of women will lose several pounds of body fat, but find they still lack the lean, athletic physique they desire.
The answer? Building muscle! This is what changes the shape and tone of your body! Unless you are brand new to strength training, you will not see increases in lean muscle mass while eating in a calorie deficit. Once you've been strength training for 6-12 months, lean mass gains will plateau. The purpose of strength training during a fat loss phase is to retain your existing lean muscle mass - not to build muscle. You simply won't have the calories required to build muscle mass in a calorie deficit! So, if your goal is building muscle, do these two things:
Follow a structured training program that utilizes progressive overload; and,
Bring your calories up to Maintenance OR a small surplus (~10%).
Q&A with Jennifer
Q: How would you describe your overall mindset about food, fat loss, and body change before The Maintenance Method©?
A: I was very leary of carbohydrates and thought I could never have bread or pasta again unless it was at my weekly Treat Meal.
Q: What were your physical results over the course of 6-weeks? (i.e. inches lost, pounds lost, body fat percentage change, BMI change, clothing size change, etc.)
A: I lost 3 pounds, .2% of body fat. It wasn’t an area I measured, but there is also an obvious loss of fat in my backside between by bra line and waist (see progress photo below).

Q. How has your mindset changed around food, fat loss, body change, etc.?
A: I understand all foods fit now! I can have pasta for lunch in the right amounts and even enjoy a PB&J in the same day. I am no longer afraid of carbs or eating. I understand if I want to grow muscles and see progress in my workouts I need to fuel my body properly with the right amount of proteins, carbs and fats.
Q: What was your favorite part of The Maintenance Method©?
A: The Coaching Group!
Q: What would you tell other women who are considering doing MM and may be apprehensive about eating more, lifting heavier, and not being in a calorie deficit, etc.?
A: Do it! Trust the process and you will see changes. Just like FAT LOSS LIFESTYLE SCHOOL, if you put in the work you will see the results! It can be alarming at first to eat so much food but you will get used to it in a few weeks, especially if you’ve been under-eating. This program taught me how to truly enjoy food everyday.
